Ash Cloud Alert Update 23rd May 2011

On Saturday, another volcano in Iceland, Grimsvotn, which sits about 120 miles east of Reykjavik, began erupting.

On Saturday, another volcano in Iceland, Grimsvotn, which sits about 120 miles east of Reykjavik, began erupting.
Keflavik airport, the country's main transport hub, was closed and remains closed this morning.

Experts are predicting that the impact on air travel this time would be more limited as winds are more favourable, the plume's content is heavier and less likely to spread, and authorities have a higher tolerance for ash levels.

However, if the eruption continues at the same rate and winds do not change, ash could reach northern Scotland by tomorrow and spread to England, France and even Spain by Thursday or Friday.

As there is no impact on flights at this stage, airlines have not issued any policies and clients who have flights that they wish to cancel or change, do so at the published fare conditions.

Should the situation change and flights become affected, Key Travel will set up a crisis team which you will be able to reach by dialling your usual number and following the prompts.

We will also update our website with the latest information and recommend that you use this as the quickest way of gaining information about how we can help you if you have flights affected or have concerns about your travel plans.

Some Precautionary Tips:

  • Be prepared for disruption, but do not be alarmed at this time
  • Be aware of who to contact within your organisation, in the event of being stranded
  • Ensure you have sufficient access to funds to pay for additional hotel accommodation and sustenance
  • If you have pre-existing medical conditions ensure that you carry enough medication to cover yourself for an extended trip
