Indonesia: Airports closed due to Ash Cloud

04 November 2015 10:45

Three airports are currently closed in Indonesia due to an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption.

Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok erupted today (Wednesday), forcing the closure of Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Selaparang airport in Mataram, the capital of West Nusatenggara province, located on Lombok Island, and Blimbingsari airport in Banyuwangi on the eastern end of main Java Island.

The closure of the airports is affecting close to 700 international and domestic flights, which have either been cancelled or delayed.

At the present time, it is not known how long the airports will be closed for. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, a decision will be made tomorrow.

Key Travel is currently in the process of contacting all customers with flights booked to travel to or from the area in the coming days.
