At Key Travel, we recognise the critical role that the travel industry plays in addressing climate change. Our customers—spanning NGOs, charities, faith organisations and academic institutions—are committed to making a difference in the world and cutting business travel emissions completely by stopping travel isn’t realistic and for many of our customers who travel to do good, travel is a necessity.

As part of our ongoing commitment to travel sustainability , we want to highlight some of the measures our airline partner Lufthansa Group is implementing to achieve its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and cutting net CO2 emissions in half by 2030 (compared to 2019).

Lufthansa Group’s Commitment to Sustainability

A Modern, Fuel-Efficient Fleet

Lufthansa Group is investing in a new generation of aircraft, with around 200 new, more sustainable planes set to enter service by 2030. These advanced aircraft reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 30%, making every flight more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

SAF is an alternative to fossil fuel and a key technology on our way to carbon-neutral aviation. Compared to fossil fuels, SAF reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80 percent. The currently most commonly used SAF is produced from biogenic residual materials (Biomass-to-Liquid, BtL). Fats from the food industry (used cooking fats) and industrial waste are used for this, so the production of SAF does not compete with food production.

Today, the Lufthansa Group is one of the largest customers worldwide, even though the quantities of SAF available are currently still small.

The Lufthansa Group is also involved in several projects to accelerate the development and industrialisation of the next generation of SAF.

Flying with sunlight

A solution for the future: The unique Sun-to-Liquid procedure uses concentrated sunlight to produce SAF. We want to be the first in the world to fly with it.

Based on renewable electrical energy

Another promising innovation: With Power-to-Liquid technology sustainable fuel can be produced from green electricity, water and CO2. The Lufthansa Group is driving the development of this technology.

AeroSHARK

As the world's first airline group, The Lufthansa Group are equipping aircraft with the innovative AeroSHARK aircraft surface film. It imitates the aerodynamic properties of sharkskin. This reduces the aircraft's drag and lowers fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions - by approximately 1 percent in the current configuration.  Find out more - https://www.lufthansagroup.com/en/responsibility/climate-environment/efficiency-improvement-in-flight-operations.html
